Knowing Jesus: John 8 (Daily Devo)
Yesterday at church it was my turn to lead communion. It was such an honor to stand up and lead our church in remembering what Jesus did for us. The phrase from the familiar communion passage from 1 Corinthians was "..in remembrance of me." He says it twice, once in regards to the bread being his body and then a second time with the wine being Jesus' blood.
It stood out to me because if Jesus didn't sacrifice his body and blood for us we would still be stuck in our sins and it wouldn't even be possible to live a holy life. But because he did that there is now new possibilities of life that we didn't have before.
And we live now by faith in that truth. Truth as implications. It leads to transformation and is not static. Jesus will say this week in John 8 that he is the truth and knowing the truth will set you free.
FREE FROM WHAT?
Following Jesus and abiding in his truth will set us free from a life that is controlled by sin. It is the only thing that has the power to break sin's powerful control over our default state. If we, much less our own children, want to live a life set free from our sin we must abide in the truth. We must let Jesus' words and teachings dwell in our minds richly.
I think often about the imagery of the tree from the Psalms. The point of being a tree planted by streams of water is that the fruit that we produce comes from the nourishment of the stream. It comes from a tree that is 'abiding' in the river's presence. The tree doesn't have to do anything else. Just stay close to the river. The fruit will come and the sin will be pruned off.
This is a really big concept that we must teach our children regularly. It's not an overnight process. It will take a lot time and prayer. But we have hope because of what Jesus did on the cross. It changes everything. We can abide by faith and our lives can be completely different. I'm praying that for my family this week and I'll do that same for you and yours.
