A Man Set Apart: Daniel 10 (Daily Devo)

Over these last few weeks our family has been hit or miss with our family devotional time.

I know, I know, I feel like I'm disappointing you all...

But I always want us to be real with each other, and I definitely don’t want to come off like my family has it all together, and that we never miss a Devo. We do.

But the days that we have sat down and opened up Daniel have been really good.

It’s not been an easy book to read, but I know that God honors our work, as we trust that his Spirit works in our efforts.

This last week, after talking about the visions that Daniel had, Nathan (our six year old) commented about how he really wished that God would give him a vision like Daniel’s. It was good conversation and we'll see if God gifts him with a vision...

Have I ever had a Daniel-like vision? No.

But it doesn’t mean I won’t. I've heard many stories of very spiritual dreams that could only be explained as a gift from God. But we’ll see this week that Daniel has another vision. And in his vision he is sent to the ground in fear and trembling.

Twice he is told that he is “greatly loved.” That really caught my attention. In this dreadful, scared moment that Daniel has, he is told, twice, “Daniel, you are greatly loved.”

Just think about the fact that Daniel did not know that Jesus would be the one to fully show his love for him by dying on the cross for his sins.

We know Jesus’ love more fully now than Daniel. That’s amazing. So many mysterious spiritual realities happening all around us (many times we don’t even know about) and yet God’s very real, tangible gift to us this week (and every week) is that he loves us. He loves you. He loves me.

We are at a time in our family devo life where the song we end up singing together at the end of 99% of our family worship times is “Jesus loves me.” So simple, but so profound. Even though it may already be, I'm hoping that song never becomes cheesy and overplayed.

Let your kids know this week that they are greatly loved, not just because you love them greatly, but that God loves them greatly.

READ:

[1] In the third year of Cyrus king of Persia a word was revealed to Daniel, who was named Belteshazzar. And the word was true, and it was a great conflict. And he understood the word and had understanding of the vision. [2] In those days I, Daniel, was mourning for three weeks. [3] I ate no delicacies, no meat or wine entered my mouth, nor did I anoint myself at all, for the full three weeks. [4] On the twenty-fourth day of the first month, as I was standing on the bank of the great river (that is, the Tigris) [5] I lifted up my eyes and looked, and behold, a man clothed in linen, with a belt of fine gold from Uphaz around his waist. [6] His body was like beryl, his face like the appearance of lightning, his eyes like flaming torches, his arms and legs like the gleam of burnished bronze, and the sound of his words like the sound of a multitude. [7] And I, Daniel, alone saw the vision, for the men who were with me did not see the vision, but a great trembling fell upon them, and they fled to hide themselves. [8] So I was left alone and saw this great vision, and no strength was left in me. My radiant appearance was fearfully changed, and I retained no strength. [9] Then I heard the sound of his words, and as I heard the sound of his words, I fell on my face in deep sleep with my face to the ground. - Daniel 10:1-9 (ESV)
